Last Sunday, August 25th, Sydney was filled with flavor and tradition as it hosted the Third Edition of the Best Chilean Empanada Contest, an event that has become a significant annual milestone for the Chilean community in Australia. With over 400 people in attendance, this gathering was not only a resounding success but also a testament to the spirit of unity and celebration that characterizes Chileans abroad.
A Gathering of Flavors and Tradition
From the early hours of the day, the atmosphere was electric with excitement. Families, friends, and curious visitors gathered to savor the best empanadas in the city, in a setting that evoked the classic Chilean fonda. The festive decorations with flags, the tables set for sharing, and the aroma of freshly baked empanadas created the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable day.
Competition and Celebration
The contest itself was the heart of the event. Four expert judges had the challenging task of tasting all the empanadas and scoring them based on rigorous criteria. In the end, "Labor Peña" took the top prize awarded by the judges, while the public, through a vote, chose "Cote Sydney" as their favorite.
But the food wasn't the only highlight of the day. Chilean music and talent were also in the spotlight, with performances by artists like Óscar Martínez, José Núñez, Sonia Altamirano, Corazón Chileno, and Alerce, who captivated the audience with their charisma. The star host of the afternoon, Mr. Héctor Briones, kept the energy high throughout the event.
A Collaborative Effort
This event was made possible thanks to the tireless work of the Club Cobreloa team, led by its president, Mr. Jorge Gahona, who dedicated himself to ensuring every detail of the organization was perfect. Additionally, the support of the Chilean Consulate in Sydney, the participation of members of the Chilean Australia Association, including its president Jorge Houdely Saieg, along with the collaboration of volunteers, artists, and sponsors, were crucial to the success of the day.
Jorge Houdely highlighted that this was a deeply family-oriented and successful event. The satisfaction among attendees was palpable, and we all hope that such initiatives continue, allowing us to keep celebrating and sharing Chile's rich culture in Australia.
