In the vibrant and multicultural setting of Sydney, a new initiative has begun to weave connections through the pages of Spanish-language books. The "Argentine-Chilean Reading Club: Lecturas del Cono Sur" is a community project that brings together the consulates of Argentina and Chile with a common goal: to promote reading and the Spanish language in Australia.
A Project of Unity and Culture
The idea arose in response to a concern shared by many Spanish-speaking families in Australia: the loss of the Spanish language among younger generations. To address this issue while also strengthening cultural identity, the Consuls General of Argentina and Chile in Sydney, Silvina Aguirre and Sebastián Canales, joined forces to create this space for gathering and learning.
According to Sebastián Canales, Consul General of Chile in Sydney, "The Lecturas del Cono Sur reading club emerged as a joint initiative with Argentina and the Amigoss Association, with the aim of promoting Spanish-language reading, given the limited visibility of our Latin American authors in Australia. Additionally, we responded to the common concern among Spanish-speaking migrants who lament the loss of the language, particularly among their children."
Sebastián also emphasised that this club aims to "create a space for connection within the Latin community, highlighting the value of language as a shared bond. Latin American literature has a significant cultural legacy, with many renowned authors, including Nobel Prize winners. We also hope that this club will serve as a platform for the community to propose new ideas and that, over time, we can attract new readers and perhaps even involve other consulates."
Launch and First Steps
The "Argentine-Chilean Reading Club: Lecturas del Cono Sur" was officially launched on 22 August 2024, marking the beginning of an exciting chapter for the Spanish-speaking community in Australia. Alongside the club's opening, an online portal was launched where those interested can register and access an extensive collection of Spanish-language literature, available in both physical and digital formats. This portal is not just a tool for members but also a bridge that keeps the Hispanic community in Australia connected to their language and culture.

More Than a Club, a Community
"Lecturas del Cono Sur" is not merely a reading club; it is an initiative that seeks to create a community, strengthen cultural ties, and provide a space where the Spanish language is not only preserved but flourishes. In an increasingly globalised world, this project serves as a reminder of the power of language and literature to bring people together, regardless of geographic distance.
