Interview with Guillermo Guzzoni

Updated: Sep 17

Today we have the opportunity to talk with a talented photographer and filmmaker, a visual creator whose work has managed to capture the essence of the everyday through photography and video. His career includes studies in Cuba, work in New Zealand, and a diverse career in Australia, where he has solidified his unique style. In this interview, Guillermo will take us through his artistic journey, his influences, and the exciting work he will present in the upcoming exhibition "Chile Sentido."

Tell us about yourself, your story, and how you got into the art world.

I studied Audiovisual Communication in Chile and Cinematography in Cuba. In Cuba, I deepened my connection with photographic techniques in cinema, lighting, cinematographic equipment, and working with actors. Cuba was the place that sparked my need to portray people and daily situations in a documentary style.

Once back in Chile, I worked for many years making TV commercials as a production assistant until I became an assistant director. I was in charge of major advertising campaigns, managing the set, technical crew, talent, timings, and post-production. I used all that experience in my personal projects and visual exploration. I'm constantly capturing places, people, and spaces, trying to create a dynamic portfolio that represents my personal development in photography and video.

As Guillermo talks about his education in Cuba and his time working in the audiovisual industry in Chile, it becomes clear that his journey has not been linear. He has transitioned between cinema, photography, and advertising production.

What brought you to Australia, and how have you experienced your art here?

I lived in New Zealand for almost two years before arriving in Australia, where I worked on independent productions, advertising, and films, among other things. When I arrived in Australia, that previous experience helped me understand the local industry. Here I’ve had a very diverse career. I’ve worked as an editor, cameraman, producer, and for over five years, I’ve run a business creating photo and video content for businesses, brands, and individuals.

ART AND CAREER

His focus remains deeply documentary, but he has also begun to explore new technologies, such as the use of drones and hyperlapse, adding new layers to his visual storytelling.

How would you describe your style or artistic approach?

My approach is based on everyday observation, oriented toward the documentary. I’m interested in common human stories that end up being unique yet universal. I’m also interested in experimenting with new technologies like drones and hyperlapse, exploring the possibilities these tools offer for creating content.

Guillermo adds that his works always aim to capture his environment and the places he inhabits, but from a cinematic perspective.

Have you been influenced by other artists or artistic movements?

From the beginning of my studies, I have been influenced by magical realism, surrealism, French Noir cinema, documentary filmmakers, and photography. I have a long list of directors, artists, and intellectuals who have filled my mind with images and inspiration. My inspiration and influences are constantly evolving.

THE WORK IN CHILE SENTIDO EXHIBITION

Here he talks about his desire to evoke nostalgia through images of Chile, his homeland, while other pieces invite a more contemplative gaze, urging the viewer to pause and observe carefully.

What works will you be presenting at this exhibition, and what inspired you to create them?

I have a collection of images from my visits to Chile. Images of the sea, people, everyday situations, cemeteries, processions, etc. My idea is to create clips that invite contemplation, to decipher, and that can stimulate the viewer.

Is there a story behind any of the pieces you’d like to share?

There are images that I hope will evoke nostalgia for Chileans attending the exhibition. The rest of the images, I hope, will invite contemplation and spark interest in the viewers.

What are your expectations for this exhibition?

I hope that those attending the exhibition enjoy the pieces on display and that this space generates other opportunities for more artists and collaborations.

REFLECTION AND FUTURE

Have you noticed any significant differences in the art scene here compared to your home country?

In general, artists in Australia have a broad view of their art, thanks to the influences they’ve received as a “young” country within the art scene. I’ve seen very good exhibitions here that could belong to any artist in the world. But the quality and background of Latin American artists are very diverse, rich in history, and full of information that is highly attractive to the Australian market and audience.

What are your next projects or goals in your artistic career?

My goal is to keep capturing images that align with my visual quest.

CONNECTION WITH THE COMMUNITY

Guillermo hopes that his work resonates with both the Chilean community and the Australian audience. His main expectation is that his work invites reflection and enjoyment, and that the exhibition opens doors to future collaborations among artists

What does it mean for you to participate in this exhibition?

It is an honor to have been invited to participate in this exhibition. Being able to connect with other artists in Australia is a privilege.

How important is it for you to connect with the Chilean community in Australia through art?

The possibility of connecting with other artists is essential to creating collaborative bonds. I am very pleasantly surprised by the level of the artists present in this exhibition.

Would you like to continue being part of these meetings? Do you have any ideas for further empowering this Chilean-Australian community?

I am absolutely interested in creating more instances of collaboration and opportunities to share and showcase the talent of artists in Australia. The idea of creating a network of connection and exhibition is definitely a privilege.

FINAL MESSAGE

What message would you like to leave for those attending the gallery?

I hope they enjoy the work of all the artists and appreciate the importance of creating spaces to showcase their creations.

How can people interested in your work follow you or get in touch with you?

I have a website with my commercial work: www.klapperfilms.com. But I am very interested in collaborating on projects using my experience as a visual creator.

With a tone of genuine gratitude, Guillermo shares his hope that the public will not only enjoy his work but also value the importance of creating spaces to showcase and connect with art. This exhibition is an opportunity to build bridges between cultures, and for him, it is an honor to be part of this experience.

Would you like to learn more about this artist?

This is an event you definitely won’t want to miss!
